An Incredible Low-Carb Modern Classic

These incredible halloumi fries are a crispy-coated delight, made for dipping, sharing and out and out enjoying. Ready in under 30 minutes, they are a doddle to make as well. We've baked them in the hottest possible oven and served ours with a yoghurt and harissa dip, giving us the lowest calorie version of this dish.

If you were to make this a higher fat, lower carb dish, simply fry the halloumi fries in olive/avocado oil and make the dip with sour cream instead of yoghurt. 

Either way, you are in for a total treat.

Halloumi... What's the story?

Halloumi is traditionally a hard sheep/goats cheese, most commonly associated with Cyprus, though similar cheeses crop up in Greek and Turkish cuisine. Because of the way it is made, halloumi is famously able to stand up to high heats and can be baked or fried without completely collapsing. It is a favourite of vegetarians looking for something that can replace meat from a textural point of view. It is a naturally high-fat cheese, so comes with a fair few calories.

Low-Carb Bread Crumbs

Lo-Dough offer the lowest carb bread crumbs on the market. By reducing carbs, you reduce calories, so this is good news for all dieters. Lo-Dough is also completely fat-free: so it's just 39 calories for the lot. In fact, most of those calories come from gut-healthy fibre - 9.3g of the stuff! 

To make your crumb, you can simply blitz the Lo-Dough straight out of the packet. For an even drier crumb (recommended), microwave your Lo-Dough for 2 minutes before blitzing.  

Serve your halloumi fries as part of a large salad for a rounded and nutritious meal.  

 

Ingredients

Serves 2
  • 1 piece of Lo-Dough
  • 1 block of halloumi
  • 1 egg
  • 2 teaspoons of harissa paste
  • A teaspoon of chopped thyme
  • Salt & pepper
  • Spray oil (approx 10-15 sprays)

For the dip

  • 4 tablespoons of fat free yoghurt
  • 2 teaspoons of harissa paste

Method

  1. Preheat your oven as hot as it will go. Take your Lo-Dough and microwave it for 2 minutes. Then break it into a nutri-bullet/food processor and blitz to a fine crumb. Put into a bowl and add your chopped herbs and seasoning.
  2. In another bowl, lightly beat the egg with 2 teaspoons of harissa paste.
  3. Slice the halloumi into fries of your desired size (if baking, chunkier fries will work a little better).
  4. Coat the fries in the egg and then the crumbs. Repeat if desired.
  5. Generously spray the fries with the spray oil and bake in the hot, preheated oven for 10-15 minutes or until golden and crispy.
  6. Put the yoghurt in a bowl with two teaspoons of harrisa paste on top. Marble a little, but don't mix completely - the contrasting layers makes it a more interesting dip. Serve with the cooked fries.
